Our History
From Humble Beginnings to Transformative Impact
VDPA began with a simple yet powerful vision: to ensure that every person, regardless of ability, has a voice and the opportunity to thrive. Founded in 2011 by community members who experienced firsthand the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Kakuma, we've grown into a comprehensive organization serving thousands.

About Kakuma Refugee Camp
Understanding our community and context

Located in Turkana County, Kenya, Kakuma Refugee Camp was established in 1992 by UNHCR to shelter the “Lost Boys of Sudan.” Over the years, it has expanded to host refugees and asylum seekers from more than 20 nationalities.
Countries represented include South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, and many others.
As of early 2025, among the camp's population are more than 8,000 unaccompanied and separated children, most placed in kinship care. It is within this diverse and vibrant community that VDPA works to ensure no one is left behind.
